Ads in Counter-Strike?

· by Zips

Imagine this: You're walking along long A in dust2 heading towards the bombsite as a Terrorist. You take out your AWP and you fire off a shot at the target in your sites. What, you didn't get the kill? Of course you didn't get the kill! You just took out an in-game likeness of Subway's Jared.

Why is Jared in your game of Counter-Strike? Well, according to Gamecloud, there's a new line of in-game advertisements that may start showing up in your favorite online FPS.
You can add Valve's shooter Counter-Strike to the list of games that have gotten in-game advertising. This press release announces the launch of a new in-game ad provide called Engage that has already worked a deal with Subway restaurants to put in in-game ads for specific cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas and Sacramento. While the press release only states that the ads appeared in "the most popular online action game played among men 18 to 34", Gamecloud confirmed with an Engage spokesperson over the phone that the ads appeared in Counter-Strike game sessions.
So far as I've seen, there has been no official statement by anyone from Valve about the validity of the appearance of ads in Counter-Strike. I'm awaiting a response back that will either deny or confirm their agreeing to include ads, but in the meantime feel free to voice your (mature) opinion on the matter!

HELL NO. I thought those damn in-game banners were bad enough but Jared would be way too much!!. I believe a boycott is in order .

edit: boycott of servers that use this crap

Has anyone actually seen this?

Anyway, about the topic - I don't like it for the simple reason that it affects the game...

I don't care (I don't like it, but can live with that) having commercials in-between rounds, or when map switch.
But having banners or similiar things poping up in mid game, that is way over the line.

TBH, I doubt that VALVe will do such thing...
GodsmackeD#34:32 pm pst - 1/10/06
that sounds so damn gay.
Ads in Counter-Strike?peagle#44:53 pm pst - 1/10/06
I always thought the irony was that clients clearly have no understanding of the medium. I played cs for years and someone had to point out to me that there were banners on d2. Games aren't like TV, an fps demands you focus on playing, not staring like a zombie at some texture.
Our post-campaign survey showed a 94 percent ad recall
And I'm sure your contract showed a 94 percent chance of additional compensation based on the 2 people you corralled.

i cant wait until they invent animated ads where you 'pwn the monkey and win an ipod'

lol its not jarrett, its with a single d...

anyway, about the advertisements... i wouldn't care about them as long as they aren't too flashy or distracting, like the current banners in d2, they would be fine as long as they are similar to that.

We'd like to take a look at this, but we're having trouble finding a server that is running in this fashion.

If someone can find one, can you shoot me the IP or name of the server please?

[email protected] works.

Thanks

Erik

Good to see it's not something that is "sponsered" by VALVe, but rather some over-"creative" company...

I'm glad to see this is not supported by Valve.
sniper5000#115:43 pm pst - 1/10/06

If I saw that in game, I would burn every subway store down for distracting me
baconman#166:21 pm pst - 1/10/06
they already have ads ingame...
meowmeow#176:24 pm pst - 1/10/06
Thank you Valve, for not selling-out.
Mullet™#186:27 pm pst - 1/10/06
Jared! Jared! Jared!, oh wait, i was thinking Jerry!, screw ads in game, then again dont play on those sellout servers that have ads.
Vlux#196:32 pm pst - 1/10/06
Dont they already have this in 1.6? I remember this rat server I used to play in with this projected hologram that shows hosting services and whatnot.
Ads in Counter-Strike?BBG#206:39 pm pst - 1/10/06
I've already seen in-game ads. See, it makes you dl a .mdl file (it looks like a TV screen), then it applies a random texture to the screen and the screens are hung at certain places in the map.
Jobbeh#216:56 pm pst - 1/10/06
I remember reading that mani mod could now upload custom banners into maps.. i think (if I read it correctly), is that not what they could use as a platform for their ads?

Anyway, I'm glad this isn't supported by valve.

You have been able to add sprites into maps for years in earlier versions, mainly simply stating a clan's name or something. If you added 2/3 sprites for every map, and simply overwrote them when they needed updating, that would be very similar, except clients already with the sprites will not see the new versions.

It's done by editing the map entities, kinda similar to the way the CPL maps were edited to remove flashbugs, but all it requires is the download of a sprite, as the map is exactly the same.

Look here for more information

Even so, I would hate to think we had to put up with ads in our servers. Things like an ad for the server host company, on a branded server (as opposed to unbranded) would be ok, as the Message of the Day is usually ignored. That would be about my limit though..

The article claims gamers are more attentive than TV viewers, which is true, but gamers are probably not attentive to reading some AD splashed in front of them when in a firefight. Still, in those slack times when dead or in freezetime, they would probably be read.
Ryosuke T#237:14 pm pst - 1/10/06
LOL. talk about retardness to the next level.

sell out -.-`
thor2488#247:19 pm pst - 1/10/06
How is this bad? This will allow more people to host servers, because they can defray the cost of the server with advertising... And as long as there's nothing to actually shoot at, how is this any different than your typical spray as a distraction? (Keeping in mind that some ads look like animated people...)
llamajoe8#257:26 pm pst - 1/10/06
yupp, already play in a dust server where they've got subaway up on the walls all the time

at first i thought it was just a spray, but its been there forever...*sigh*

good marketing strat though i'd say
Ads in Counter-Strike?MikeJ#267:30 pm pst - 1/10/06
In-game advertising can work in a map where you would expect an ad/billboard, but that office ad is out of place and looks horrible. And on a map like dust? Forget it.

Of course the most popular map in CS history, dust2, has ads on it. But it is somewhat subtle I guess, it's certainly not a large lit up crystal clear subway ad with huge font and bright bulging letters.

I've played plenty of games where I wouldn't mind real ads anymore than the fake ads they replace, but trying to squeeze them into places where ads were never meant to be is just sleezy.

This is a sign of CS going BIG, and you people must accept it. Valve is going to introduce Steam to the non-gamers of the internet soon (by offering media content as I heard), so this is kinda inevitable.

This doesn't seem to be endorsed by Valve.

then it's just an amateur move from that company to pay a few local server hosting companies to show those ads .?..
donkeynuts123#308:04 pm pst - 1/10/06
ahahahhahah rofl those ads are fine i dont give a shit about that but it just amkes the maps uglier i thought they would be like pop-up ads lol
Ads in Counter-Strike?LeRaldo#318:19 pm pst - 1/10/06
I haven't read any of the previous comments, but there's been quite a few servers for several years that have had shitty server mods/plugins that put ads over several of the normal/stock maps like de_dust2 and so on. Whatever this company is doing is nothing new as far as I'm aware...
esky#328:41 pm pst - 1/10/06
Can't Valve just block these AD programs like they block cheats? A client could probably easily block this by disabling downloads or decals, but Valve could combat this stuff better...
VuLLrath#339:03 pm pst - 1/10/06
lets see... what shares a common hate with ads... oh popups...

i seriously hope they do not put ads in my cs games.
no one will play. you go to do something and boom ads popups and spray paint bull crap.

as if connecting to a laggy server with html ads wasnt enough as well as stupid spraypaints but now their gonna add this crap?

if this goes into effect then yes that previous post about cs getting competition with bf2 cod2 n such will have new meaning. cs will die, and have no competition because its self will not be a form of competition...
snkcube#3410:31 pm pst - 1/10/06
Ads....*cries
[CZ] Qw4z0#3511:12 pm pst - 1/10/06
yea!!!

one more reason to play much better games like bf2!
agent420#3611:42 pm pst - 1/10/06
i think im gonna take that subway ad and make a spray....
Deletable_Man#378:42 am pst - 1/11/06
lol all we need now is to install firefox in our CS :P (yes, thats a silly joke)

Seriously though, I'd like to make a spray with a giant adaware logo and spray it over those subway ads. Yeah, just my way to rage against the meatball sub.
Splatula#388:52 am pst - 1/11/06
Unfortunately, even if Valve didn't/doesn't support ads... the way marketing companies use guerilla marketing techniques they could just use sprays to blanket a server with ads for a few rounds. It's cheap, effective and you can target specific audiences. Like for example, imagine you are watching the final round in summer CPL (i need the thoughts of warm weather right now) and one of the teams sprays tags of their sponsor all over while they play. Well... that will be thousands of young people who will have been exposed to a quick flash of an ad in game. Heck, in CSS you can even have animated sprays, which means even crazier ads. Yuck!
Ads in Counter-Strike?ukHazard#391:25 pm pst - 1/11/06
UK2 put their own ads in CS for years.

Worst hosting ever.
EdisLeado#401:49 pm pst - 1/11/06
WTF?! I'd rather ads in a plausible place, like lets say in a subway station map, there's ads on the walls. Not in the middle of CS_OFFICE! Put the adds on magazines on the table, or on the TV or on the computer screen, not a gigantic ad on the wall where it sticks out like a sore thumb.
