Valve talks microtransactions

No, don't freak out - so far, Valve is not considering microtransactions. In an interview at play.tm, which mainly focus on Left 4 Dead, the subject of microtransactions are brought up. And what is the verdict?
Would Valve ever go micro-transactional?

If we ever get a game that fits that, we'd love to do that. I'd love to have a game that we gave away saying 'however much you want to invest in this, this is yours'.
I, personally, don't think it's a good idea. But, as MMOs and other games have proven, there are games out there that people will buy (microtransaction-wise) anything for. Go ahead and read the rest of the article too - it is mostly a re-tread of information we already know, but interesting none-the-less.

he said if it fits the game and then they would give the game away for free. So i see nothing to be negative about . I personally don't support microtransactions, but if you're going to do it, that sounds like a good way.

Put it this way.

I support microtransactions if there's a finite amount of them, and, totalling all the possible transactions, you've paid the price of a full game. Then you could save money by not buying the parts you don't want!

However, what I don't like is big, obvious sections of the game that say "buy me, buy me" or "this is what you could have if you bought me" or "you can't come in here if you don't buy me"

I'd like each transaction to be like a mini-expansion pack. 'Hidden option' definitely sounds good for microtransactions.
