Grand Theft Auto 4's Street Date = Broken
Zips @ 2:16 pm pdt on 4/23/08 - general
Really, is anybody surprised? The street date for GTA 4 has been broken for both the PS3 and 360 version of the game, but only in parts of Europe and Australia so far. There's already a good handful of videos out there if you know where to look for them.

Yes, the videos may or may not contain spoilers. Most of the footage that is presently out there mainly consists of running around or driving cars and beating up on pedestrians. Watch at your own risk.

Heh, I wonder how long before some ninja store employee steals a copy
and sticks some ghetto pirate footage online..?

It wasn't from B&M stores, online retailers have been shipping their games far too early to customers.

Also De Niro and Stephen Colbert are said to be in the game. The second one hosting his own show on the Right Wing talk radio station.

Since when was watching user submitted videos from a broken street date an illegal activity? Answer: Never.

Yeah, very clever.

Watching the videos isn't illegal, but the fact that people have the game before release and are posting footage is illegal. That's why Take Two are taking the videos down as they find them.

Haha, no it's not! If a retailer broke the street date, it's still not illegal for people to play it that have bought it. The retailers might get into a little bit of trouble, but that's about it.

Are you sure? Surely they can't make money from something that's not supposed to be on sale?

Yes, I'm sure. Whether or not the release date was or was not broken, a sale is a sale. All revenues are distributed along the supply chain just as it always is. Retailers, publishers, developers, transporters, etc.

The retailer will be breaking a contract, not the law in any case. They're just videos... As a game developer, I don't think I'd mind if my game were leaked early and some videos were posted on the net. The only reason for a street date is to allow for a smooth, unified marketing event.

I guess I should mention that a lot of what's being played is a pirated version of the PS3 game. That's more than just breaking the street date and that is kinda lame — hopefully anyone with a leaked version of the game ends up buying it.
