It Doesn't Ad Up

Remember that little issue where ads in your game of Counter-Strike were the hot topic around these parts? It seems as though the ad agency responsible for whole ad debacle, IGA, have come to a mutual agreement with Valve on the issue. Chris Remo at Shacknews lays down the details of the resolution and provides to us the press release from the two companies.Last year, IGA arranged for the placement of advertising in Counter-Strike for certain advertisers and their agencies. Like all commercial advertisements, ads in games such as Counter-Strike require permission from the intellectual property (IP) owner. IGA has always sought to honor the intellectual property rights of the owners of games in which its advertising is inserted. IGA takes its responsibility to obtain such permission very seriously.I'm glad to hear about the peaceful resolution, but the last sentence that I quoted leaves me a little worried for future endeavors. It's not saying anything concrete, but you may as well fire up those speculation machines!
Valve and IGA have announced that they are pleased to have reached a swift and professional resolution of any issues that may have existed between them, IGA's advertisers and IGA's advertising agencies. Valve and IGA look forward to discussing mutually beneficial opportunities in the future.

Short code: Valve sees an oppurtunity for extra revenue from these game advertisements. :) |

I'd like to see real beverage brands on things like the drink machines in cs_office. Just no Subway sandwich billboards plastered all over maps like cs_italy. |

As long as they keep the ads in a single image, its fine. When it starts moving around and yelling buy this or that, steam is gone from this pc. |

If Valve pulls any shit like Vivendi did in SWAT 4, I'll never buy another game from them. You're bombarded enough my shitty companies wanting to take your money in the regular world. Should this happen from your games too? |

I'm fine with advertisements as long as they fit in. Like I don't wanna see a bunch of movie posters in an office building like SWAT4 had. If anything else, advertisements in the right place just add more immersion. |

Leave real world stuff to the real world. If they start adding more crap like this into games then some people with problems will find it hard to tell the difference between RL and the game. its stupid and will just add more greedyness by servers. |

You can put ads up if you want VALVe, but don’t except me to pay for your games anymore. I see it this way, you want to load a game up with ad's it should be free. Why? Well what pays TV stations to run? How about websites? Reality shows? I don’t have to pay anything to watch the channels on TV, I don’t have to pay to talk on CS-Nation, and I am able to watch Reality shows for free and see people embarrass themselves for greed and fame So why do I need to pay for a game that is infested with ad's? especially from a company that I am sure is finically secure. It would make more sense to put ad's up in steam since steam is free for anyone to use. |

WooFerPPK wrote..Don't you pay for cable and internet access? Anyway, my evaluation of "Valve and IGA look forward to discussing mutually beneficial opportunities in the future." simply means that IGA gets to walk away without being sued into oblivion. I'd really be surprised if Valve okayed 3rd-party ads in CSS and other Steam games. |

Bring back pop dog ads.HowlinMadMurphy wrote..I hope you're right on this one, Howlin. That said, I would have really enjoyed watching IGA get destroyed by VALVe's legal team. |

The upcoming 1337 krew model wears a bloody Motorola RAZR, I would have thought the mutually beneficial partnership was already in place. |

Edited by WooFerPPK @ 5:36 am pst on 2/17/06 HowlinMadMurphy wrote..Yes but that is for service. The cable company's are not affiliated with TBS or some other station. What ever TBS puts on there channel has nothing to do with the cable company. Unless the cable company has rules like no porn, swearing, etc… Internet access is the same thing; I pay my ISP monthly so I am able to access the internet. By paying my ISP monthly does not help CS-Nation or any other site stay up. hahnchen wrote..I don’t see a big M anywhere on the razr on the l33t krew model. I’m sure if Motorola was paying valve for there phone to be on there belt you would see an M somewhere on it. i mean you do see where the M should be but its not there. |

Doesn't Manimod enable you to place decals (of your choice) within maps? I use Beetlemod so I'm not sure of the specfics, but I wonder what the possible ramifications of that are.woah wrote..Get over it, they are advertising on parking stripes these days. http://www.tbt.com/news/article17584.ece |

peagle wrote..Wow, isn't that ugly. Like most people mentioned, I don't really mind ads, but I think VALVe should give users the choice to implent ads into their server. However, that revenue generated should go towards the host who paid for the server, not VALVe. Much like websites and such. |

Hmmm.... Make money for implementing ads into a game and it wont affect gameplay : Or listen to a community that pretty much bitches about anything and everything (i.e. the name change for aftermath) and make no extra money at all.... You guys are making this decision that much easier for everyone at valve |

Vlux wrote..Every generation seems to despair at the new and innovative places advertising appears. The fact is, anything you don't own can be used to communicate a message, from parking stripes to stickers on currency. It will ultimately be the server owners choise whether to implement the ads if its done right. So if you hate ads so much then you just play on a different server. get over it.. |

Server admins will not customize ingame assets for the sole reason of removing product placement. I think your idea of "ads" is much different than Valve's. |
