30,000 Steam Accounts Banned
DchozN @ 6:35 pm pst on 12/22/04 - community
Valve disabled an additional 30,000 Steam user accounts that were found "to illegally gain access to Valve games without a valid purchase".
Today Valve disabled more than 30,000 Steam accounts which had been used to try to illegally gain access to Valve games without a valid purchase. Here's the quote for non-Steam forum members.

Valve takes such activities seriously and reserves the right to disable Steam accounts engaging in piracy, cheating, illegal activities, or any other activity in violation of the Steam Subscriber Agreement. The accounts that are disabled today will not be reactivated. - Erik Johnson (Valve)

Hmm, paid for my package. But today seems after the update, I cannot connect to steam or any games. Hmmm.. Uninstalled, and reinstalled fresh, same errors.

Weird.

Anyway, good job VALVe!

I would say they got owned, but they can just make new accounts. The only ones that are hurt by this are the ones dumb enough to apply the cracks to accounts with games already on them.

I believe I speak for everyone when I say, "holy crap!"

For those who can't connect, don't worry too much. I'm pretty sure people whose accounts are disabled get a message saying so.

No. This way they scare people out of doing it again. And I'm sure they fixed the problem anyway.

So they're such good games, you went out and bought them legally? How exactly did Valve get owned?

No they haven't fixed the problem. Also, this doesn't "scare" people from doing it again. I guarantee that at least 3/4 (probably more) of those accounts were completely blank or just duplicates. There are still tons of ways to get free games on steam and all anyone has to do is register a new steam account, and Valve bans that account. Pretty crappy way of scaring people, if you ask me.

They have in at least one case - they disabled that fake CD-Key that everyone was using.

So they're attacking the problem on both fronts, and I don't see any problem with that.

What makes you say they haven't fixed it?

As for not scaring people, those who hadn't done it before might hear the huge number of accounts that were banned for using illegal copies and decide not to do the same thing.

Third, if most of the accounts were blank accounts or duplicates, what's the problem with Valve banning them? I'm sure it couldn't have taken more than a few hours' worth of work.

LOL YEAH

it is very useless to ban fake accounts.. lets think about it, if their smart enuf to dl hl2 and get it working, you think they'd be smart enuf NOT to use the real account which has games on it....i mean come on, takes like 10 seconds and an email (not even a valid one) to create a steam account, their only kidding the ppl who actually believe this is stopping or slowing piracy.

wtf is going on with VAC, its becomeing more of a pain to download the useless secrurity module which practically doubles my connection time to a server, when upon joining to find like 3 freaking hackers..

valve should worry just as much about their anti cheat

Wow maybe Valve is making some money with Steam...

If these guys are dumb enough to break the EULA with steam accounts full of legit games and get caught, then Valve will make a ton of money using this paroleware when they buy their games a second time.

Moral of the story... If you're a warez monkey use a Steam emulator. Or is it crime doesn't pay?

You say that as if the entire CS community is warezing the game. If 40,000 of them were doing it, then 30,000 banned is a hell of a lot.
