CS:S Seoul Impressions
rizzuh @ 12:43 pm pdt on 7/3/04 - counter-strike
Update: In addition to nadomola's impressions (below), Nari CS has posted a large selection of images and video clips from the CS:S event in Seoul. Thanks to CSN comments poster Shuzer for word of that page. You may want to right click and save as these two links to view the videos in their full resolution.

In a comments post here on CS-Nation, CSN member nadomola has posted his impressions on CS: Source and sent along a few camera shots of the game (mirrored locally below). Although not as nearly as impressive as the clear shots we saw earlier in the week, the shots are the first glimpse at the new Dust2.

Besides saying that Jess Cliffe is apparently a superstar in South Korea, nadomola described the current state of CS: Source as incomplete but very similar to CS 1.6 in terms of feel and gameplay. CS: Source being playable for the first time in a relatively public setting is a huge milestone for the game and lends credence to speculation that the game will be released during the summer or fall. Nadomola his impressions with the following unintelligible statement:
Consequently, I say today's CS:S playable version looks good. I can't call it an albatross, but it could be a birdie or an eagle. I'm looking forward to seeing the completed CS:S soon, hopefully this fall as Gave said.
Click here for the man's full thoughts. Thanks for the impressions, nadomola!

Slightly more detailed thread at HL2.net

http://narics.net/cs.source/showcase.php
The site he linked to for both CS:S screens and videos

Edit:

The two other screens he posted:
http://myhome.hanafos.com/~dream111/de_korea/dust2_b.jpg
http://myhome.hanafos.com/~dream111/de_...ayablecss.jpg

BTW, the smooth (smoother of the two streamed there) video linked at the narics site is a nice watch. It's 10 minutes and its clarity is decent, shows alot of what we hadn't known before

IE. you can see your own shadow you cast in first person :)

Just saw the vid. Dust2 looks really great, but it did seem larger? Maybe I'm seeing things but especially the area left of ct spawn seemed much bigger. (we call it center where I'm from ;)) Looks like they've made the maps a bit bigger.

Also, anyone else notice if the silencer is always on the USP when shown in 3rd person? Noticed once when they spectated a guy in 1st person using the usp without the silencer that it was on when the perspective changed to 3rd like in old cs - One of those little things that's always annoyed me about old cs. Hopefully they'll change that before release :)

/anxiously awaits Gone Gold announcement ;)

Which is the whole point.
After all... CS is fine right now. If you ignore certain glaring issues, of course...

It's called "Counter-Strike: Source" for one reason. It's CS on the Source engine. You won't see great strides or extreme changes in gameplay here as it's the same game on a new engine. Just wait for CS2 for the extreme changes to come.

Ah, I thought you were let down in the gameplay department. What though, is so disappointing about the updated graphics? We're looking at little 320x240 resolution shaky cam videos here =/

They're rushing it for the HL2 release. They know this feature will sell LOTS of copies. Its a pity really, money is where the whole thing boils down to, I hate it.

If they were really doing this for money, would they be giving it to us for free? They could easily charge us for it and make twice as much money...

watched the video. graphics look amazing. gameplay looks about the same. the only thing that bugs me are the player animations. i prefer the current ones to the ones i saw in the video. the cs2 ones seem to skate around the floor and just move way to "smoothly".

well i can tell that the graphics ARE superb, yes, but not quite what i was looking for, what im trying to say is that no matter how good these graphics are, a person can still think they suck, compared to what they thought they would be. in this case, i thought they would be better, so i feel let down, waitin so long for a game that has graphics of this quality

i thought counter-strike was about the gameplay, not about the graphics.

the graphical changes they made to maps, it seems like they don't care how these changes affect the gameplay.

I sure hope that if they made maps bigger, that they only made them just a wee tiny bit bigger or else we're gonna be looking at forum post after forum post of clan players talking about how valve ruined the game without talking to the players, aaaaaand I don't want to have to endure those posts.

ummm .... take a look at the graphics of cs now ...... and ask yourself why your still playing and if your not ... then i dont really want to hear your opinion

my point is that graphics dont matter much so who cares if it doesnt look like farcry or doom3 .... its CS ... its not either of those two games ... its the game people have been playing for 5+ years and still draws such a crowd that companies pay more for competitions on it than any other game

plz people ...keep in mind this is a PORT .... im not a game designing guru but i do believe that there is a HUGE diff between porting an engine into a game w/ 5 year old code and creating a game w/ code surounding and taking advantage of the engine

the reason they are having such problems w/ stuff such as map size, object pathways/movement, and character movement is that they are REWRITING the old cs code to take advantage of the new engine ... its like taking a pipe holding x amount of water and makinga new pipe (i.e. engine) and then running the same amount of water thru the new bigger pipe ... somebody has to go back and turn on more water to fill it up

honestly .... be patient .... IMHO the only reason they are rushing this right now is because they had free time while the others did damage containment from the hacker and decided they would give us the port SOONER than what would have happened .... its possible that we are getting the port at the same time we would have if hl2 had come out last fall its just they didnt have as much manpower available due to damage control

my ranting sry so long

you're analogy makes no sense. heres a better one. theyre porting an old game from an old engine, to a new engine, but the games the same.

I gotta hand it to valve, CS Source looks Great. The maps they redid look spectacular. I noticed how they added plenty of objects to play with, barrels, tables etc. It is great what they did for the CS Community for enhancing the experience CS has given us for years.

I cant wait! It sucks how it's pushed back AGAIN/SOMEMORE. I was hoping for a mid/late summer realsease. If they release a demo for HL2 I'd be set until release. Or maybe something like the one "glass house" map in Red Faction to show off the physics and stuff. Please valve, I beg of you! I think i'd even pay for the demo hahah
