Covering the future of Counter-Strike
what is "source?"
Source is the name of the new engine that will be powering Half-Life 2. Of course, all of the Source ports will use the same engine. A small number of third party companies have purchased a license to use the Source engine in their own games.

The Source engine introduces some of the best phyics rendering yet seen in a video game. Along with amazing physics, Source features realistic animation routines and top-of-the-line graphics that have never before seen in a gaming environment. The engine is the powerhouse behind a sophisticated AI system that will have NPC's sensing their surroundings and performing tasks on the fly as if they were thinking. The Source engine utilizes the current DirectX 9 graphical features, but can be scaled back to accomodate cards all the way back to the DirectX 6 generation.

Half-Life 2 on Source

The Source engine will allow for mappers to create gameplay environments upwards of 10 times the current map size found in Half-Life 1 and Counter-Strike. Other features of the Source engine include real-time radiosity lighting, deformable terrain, materials that dictate the behavior of an object, as well as many other key features that will place the player in more realistic environments than ever seen before in a gaming world.
