what are the different file types for models?
When looking in a .zip file, there's a variety of files you may see. Here is an explanation of what each file is for:Typical replacement packs
v_(weapon).mdl
-
» The v_ is for "View" model. This is what the weapon looks like in your own hands.
-
» Again in your own hands, but this time holding a shield as well. Only applies to knives, pistols, and grenades.
p_(weapon).mdl
-
» The p_ is for "Player" model. This is the weapon you see upright in the hands of other players.
-
» Same as above, but with a shield in their hands as well.
w_(weapon).mdl
-
» The w_ is for "World" model. This is the weapon you see when it has been dropped, lying on the ground.
v_(weapon)_r.mdl
-
» Files ending with _r are relics from previous versions of CS, and are not used by CS1.6. Don't copy them into your models directory when installing, as they simply waste space and make the folder more cluttered.
Sometimes multiple versions of some of these files may be included, either in separate directories in the .zip file, or slightly renamed. After you have selected the one you wish to use, make sure it has the correct, generic name.

Other files:
-
» *.wav
Anything ending with .wav is a sound file. You can probably guess what it is for based on what kind of pack it's included with. Typically they are weapon sounds.
» *.spr
Files ending with .spr are sprites.
