How-To Guides

Model Installation

With CS 1.6 now being delivered through Steam, the installation of custom models is a little more confusing, mostly because you have to create a folder structure to put your models in since the defaults are now stored in an archive file. This folder structure is built under the Steam folder structure, so you'll need to know where you installed it on your computer. For most people, that will be something like "C:\Program Files\Steam\". In there should be a folder named "SteamApps" which contains another folder with the same name as the email address you used to register with Steam. Inside that one will be a "counter-strike" folder, which in turns contains a "cstrike" one. Open that "cstrike" folder, and then proceed to the appropriate section below.

Note that the following instructions list all the steps required for a first installation, so some steps will be redundant for subsequent installation (you obviously will not need to create folders more than once...). For those who haven't yet read "Windows for Dummies", to create a folder you simply right-click in the background of the parent folder, select "New" -> "Folder" from the menu, type in the name and hit "Enter". You can also do it through the "File" pulldown menu.

To uninstall a model or VGUI picture, simply delete it and the default one will be used again.

Player  Models

There are 9 distinct player models: the 4 CTs (called "gign.mdl", "gsg9.mdl", "sas.mdl" and "urban.mdl"), the 4 Ts ("arctic.mdl", "guerilla.mdl", "leet.mdl" and "terror.mdl") and the VIP ("vip.mdl"). To install any of those, you will need to have a folder called "models" under the "cstrike" one. Create it if it doesn't exist already. In this "models" folder, you will need to have a folder named "player" that in turn contains a folder with the same name as the model file without the extension (e.g. "gign" for "gign.mdl", etc...). Again, create these folders as required. The model file should then be extracted into that last folder with the matching name.

For those packs that have alternate models, you can replace any of the normal models with an alternate one by simply renaming the alternate to the same name as the model you want to replace.

Bomb Backpack And Defuse Kit Models

The files for these are named respectively "w_backpack.mdl" and "w_thighpack.mdl". Naturally, whichever pack you are installing should only contain one of these two. To install either of those, you will need to have a folder called "models" under the "cstrike" one. Create it if it doesn't exist already. You then simply have to extract the file into this "models" folder.

Hostage Models

There are two files for these, named "hostage.mdl" and "scientist.mdl". Both model files are fully interchangeable, so you can copy and rename one to the other if you want to use the same model for both. These go in the same folder as the bomb backpack and defuse kit models, so simply follow the instructions above.

VGUI Menu Pictures

These are the pictures you see in your class selection menu. They have the same name as the corresponding player model files, but with a .tga extension instead of .mdl (e.g. "leet.tga" is the picture associated to "leet.mdl"). To install any of those, you will need to have a folder called "gfx" under the "cstrike" one. Create it if it doesn't exist already. In this "gfx" folder, you will need to have a "vgui" folder. Again, create it if it doesn't exist already. The picture file should then be extracted into that "vgui" folder.

If you have replaced one of the normal models from a pack by an alternate one, don't forget to also swap the VGUI pictures by renaming the picture for the alternate to the same name as the one for the model you replaced.
