September 2001 News
Sunday September 30th, DE_BOATRUN being mapped, SCREENSHOTS
Wow now this is the coolest. BFP Slacker
one of the 2D submitters (Vertigo)
has begun
work on a 3D playable map using a design idea from Sketch
Pad. The map is called DE_BOATRUN
by Pat Karousis (September 17, 2001). Matt has done
a fair bit of work on the 3D mapping of this map and has even created a choice
selection of screenshots.
Check the
screenshots out here!
This is pretty cool because this is looking up to be a real success for
CS2D's Sketch Pad. A 2D plan being made into a fully functioning 3D
environment. I will keep you up to date on all developments on this story
and when the final 3D map is created I plan to host it up on CS2D.
This really kicks butt, Half-Pint
Saturday September 29th, General news update, Preview of ITALY REDUX!
For those not familiar with what's going on. I am slowly, as time permits
redoing some of my old favourite 2D maps into very kick butt images. I got some
new software and have been working on these maps whenever I have access to it.
The results are phenomenal. This is the OLD
DE_DUST and this is the REDUX
DUST that I did with the new software (ArcInfo 8.1). I had so much success
with the REDUX of dust that I have decided to also do one for Italy.
My CS_Italy Redux keeps getting bigger and bigger in scope. I started with
just making some minor tweaks to the new formatting. Then I got carried away
some where and have added details right down to the railings :) Currently I have
added transparencies so that you will be able to see structures running under
levels and roofs. It's a pretty nifty effect, I'm not too sure how printer
friendly it will be, but if it isn't very I will make 2 versions. Oh what the
hell here is a snippet of what I'm doing:
CLICK HERE TO SEE A SAMPLE
(174kb) comparing the old with the new!
Expect to see the new version coming this way sometime next week. Till then
good hunting and keep those Sketch Pad's coming
in!
Cheers, Half-Pint
Monday September 24th, AS_TRAPPED in Sketch Pad
Well I'm back from Toronto and I had a fantastic time at Amber
Con North this year.
As soon as I got back in town I opened my mailbox to find Sketch
Pad #8 AS_TRAPPED by Patrick Lee.
This map is fairly simple but helps to put forward an untested design in AS
styled maps. So check it out in Sketch Pad.
Work continues on Italy Redux and I'm nearing completion. Oddly enough the
map got bigger than last time and I'm trying to figure out how to fix that
problem :) So far it's looking drastically different then it used to be with similar
colour schemes as the Dust Redux.
Other than that not too much in the news except that CS2D is coming mighty
close to 2 Million Hits woot!
Cheers, Half-Pint
Wednesday September 19th, DE_NUM3 in Sketch Pad
This sketched map has a cool setting around a mine and looks really cool.
This map is called DE_NUM3
and was designed by -Allen-. It looks
cool so head over to sketch pad and check it out!.
Keep those sketch's coming and hopefully your idea will get mapped!
No Italy Redux this week. I just haven't been able to find the time.
Once I get Italy out of the way I plan to map out DE_SURVIVOR from the 1.3 CS
release. I will be looking for a submission of DE_STORM to fill the void.
Oh yeah I got some cool news. The Limper otherwise known as Reavus Dar who
created the most kick butt intro for this site, is working up a brand new intro
sequence for this site. More news when it comes my way.
Cheers, Half-Pint
Monday September 17th, Disaster Relief, 1.3 Queries, DE_BOATRUN in Sketch Pad
Firstly, I want to suggest a RED
CROSS DISASTER RELIEF DONATION to help the recovery efforts in the US. I
looked for something to do to help out, so I just gave a day's pay to DISASTER
RELIEF. I encourage you do so if you aren't already helping out so head over
to Amazon and give a days pay or whatever you can afford to help those in need!
Secondly, I have gotten some questions concerning my site and CS 1.3
which as we all know has that snazzy 2D map thing. Well I did some reading and
looked at screenshots and all those maps are, are layered screenshots. They
don't show you what's cover at all. From a tactical perspective you could plan
rough routes/indicate general tactics but you could never do something too
specific with them. To me they seem to be just another tool in the arsenal of
good tactics and won't affect the goal of this site. To provide superior
tactical base maps for newbies and clans alike.
Thirdly, I got a brand new sketchpad
for all your mappers out there. Let the ideas roll in! This new one is called DE_BOATRUN
created by Pat Karousis. Boatrun is a
fast paced map where the Terrorist team attempts to blow a naval ship up.
I also replaced the PDF of my DE_DUST
redux. I noticed that the file size was like 1 meg and noticed that I had
the DPI cranked a little too high when I made the file. I got the file size down
to cozy 100kb which has also reduced the size of the collected
works PDF to (3.5 Megs).
I'm going to see if I can get Italy REDUX up tomorrow night. If I can't it
will have to wait till I get back from Amber
Con North after this weekend.
Have a great day, Half-Pint
Thursday September 13th, DE_VERTIGO new
submission
I have received another great work by Matt Soler
(BFP Slacker) this time he mapped out DE_VERTIGO.
I am very impressed that the design has followed my lead with a grid reference
not to mention that it looks fantastic. So head over to the Vertigo section.
I am currently nearing completion on a REDUX (like what I did with DUST)
of my CS_ITALY map. I hoping to
complete the map next Monday/Tuesday.
You can of course get new version of COLLECTED WORKS in ZIP
(4.5 Megs) and PDF
(4.3 Megs)
with the DE_VERTIGO map.
More success with Sketch Pad, I got this today
from Wes0r after yesterdays post:
"I want to say that I got tons (well 5) people who want to make the map
now. Thanks for posting it." Wes0r
Cheers, Half-Pint
Wednesday September 12th, New Sketch pad
submission and news
Today I received a brand new sketch pad submission
(giving me a total of 5 submissions). This map features a lot of open spaces and
close assault combat action. I really like the idea and I hope you do to. It's
called DE_COAL by Wes0r.
I have also redesigned the sketch pad section to
add some preview images of each sketch.
In other sketch pad related news I was informed by Greg
Young that a mapper has agreed to work on CS_PHENOMENON
and make it into 3D. So hopefully it will be moving to the submitted category of
2D maps. Whenever the 3D map is completed I will host the file for anyone to try
it out and give feedback to the mappers.
Tomorrow I will be updating with a 2D plan for DE_VERTIGO. So
you can look forward to that.
I would like to take this time to express my own horror and sadness at the
events of yesterday and say that my thoughts and prayers are with all those who
were affected by this horrific tragedy.

Monday September 10th, Two words: DE TORN!!!
Well here is a map I was planning on getting done myself but one of my fellow
2D mappers beat me to the punch this time and created a pre-release 2D work,
just like last CS release when I did Thunder pre-release. CS2D is proud to bring
you DE_TORN IN 2D by =LC=Juicy
pre-release before 1.3 WOOT!
In other news I should have a REDUX version of my Italy map by the end of
this week in the new style of my Dust map.
Like always you can grab a new Collected Works ZIP
(4.2Megs) or PDF
(4.1Megs) with Torn in it now!
Now I don't want to get on a 1.3 server and hear that your lost on Torn :) Half-Pint
Sunday September 9th, NEW SKETCH PAD and MORE
RUSSIAN TRANSLATIONS!!
I keep getting more stuff, this is so cool!
New today a brand new entry into the sketch pad
section entitled CS_BEVERLY
by -= Sidewinder =- where
Counter-Terrorists must rescue hostages in a Beverly hills estate.
I also have 4 more Russian translations available this time brought to you by
*AkM*DAG. You can download
the ZIP (334kb) here.
I'm really happy that my sketch pad section is really working out. So if you
have a great idea for a CS map sketch it out and send it my way! Half-Pint
Friday September 7th, !!!DE_DUST REDUX!!!
In with the new and out with the old. This is the second time I have done a
complete re-do of one of my 2D maps. I picked DUST
not only because it is the most played CS map but also because it is the first
2D map I ever completed. This new one was completed using a mix of ArcView 3.2a
and ArcInfo 8.1 and the final results are just beautiful. This new map has a lot
more eye candy and is much more functional for clans and tactics, new features
include:
Better Colourization - less in your face design.
Colour Ramped Stairs - the colours of each level
now slowly merge together giving a smooth transition effect.
Reference Grid - Now you can reference your
position on the map so other people will actually know where you are. I used
military/police letter lingo like "Charlie and Foxtrot" so when 1.3 CS
comes out and we start talking their won't be any confusion as to what we are
saying.
Clearly Designated Bombsites - Fancy Effects ho!
Screenshot - The map now incorporates a screenshot
of what the map actually looks like, because well..it looks cool this way.
Weblinks - The PDF version now includes weblinks to
my email and this site.
Available as a JPEG
(300kb) and as a high
quality PDF (900kb).
You can of course download the updated Collected Works ZIP
(4.1 Megs) or PDF
(3.9 Megs) as well.
For now I'm not entirely sure if I'm going to re-do all my maps. I'm leaning
towards a selection of REDUX's as time permits. The big thing is that on future
works such as my upcoming 2D plan of DE_TORN I plan to use this new format.
Cheers, Half-Pint
Thursday September 6th, Sketch Pad #3, Dust
Image, French Translations
Hi All! Today is a busy day and I got a boot load of new content. So check it
out!
New Sketch Pad submission (bringing it to 3)
by Andrew L.P. entitled CS_NORTHOLLYWOOD.
It's a bank robbery gone bad map and looks pretty sweet.
New Image map by Matt Soler for DE_DUST.
This is a pretty slick work that looks distinctly different from most 2D plans
as it uses the original dust textures on the map. Grab
his map here!
Also I have been given translations for all of my maps (excluding
submissions) in French
with great translation by Loone.
This is some great work and helps to expand who can use CS2D resources, great
job! You can download all the French Translations as a ZIP
file (390kb).
I have also re-organized my collected works zip and PDF documents. I noticed
they were getting kind of big and unwieldy so I have grouped them by language
now in order to minimize file size and your bandwidth usage. Please note that I
am not making PDF's for the translations as their work is best left in it's
original form.
English/German Complete ZIP
and PDF (these are
the big ones)
Italian ZIP
Hungarian ZIP
Russian ZIP
French ZIP
Work continues on DE_TORN. I have mapped it roughly in my head and taken
around 120 screenshots to work from. All I have to do is find enough time and
voila I will have a 2D map.
Have a great day and keep those map sketches coming, Half-Pint
Monday September 3rd, New Sketchpad submission
Hi everyone. New sketch pad submission today
by Cyber|Snake entitled DE_KUIKSTRIKE
so check it out!
Cheers, Half-Pint
